As one of the most effective antioxidants in nature, Astaxanthin is widely used in anti-aging products, cosmetics, and health products. In recent years, the market size of the above-mentioned products has grown rapidly, and the consumption of astaxanthin has also continued to increase. As the best source of natural astaxanthin, the development of the rain red algae industry has attracted much attention.

Rainy red algae is a freshwater unicellular green algae that appears red due to the accumulation of astaxanthin, hence the name red algae. Rainy red algae are rich in nutritional and medicinal value, with astaxanthin content ranging from 1.5% to 10.0%, and are considered as a "concentrated product" of natural astaxanthin. According to statistics, the current global annual production of rain fed red algae is about 800 tons, with an average astaxanthin content of about 4%.

As early as 2010, Yusheng Hongqiu algae was approved as a new resource food in China. However, for a considerable period of time in the past, industrialization has been a difficult problem for China's red algae industry due to the technological monopoly of a few companies in Europe, America, and Japan.

The difficulties in the industrialization of Haematococcus pluvialis are manifested in two aspects: on the one hand, the difficulty in large-scale cultivation of Haematococcus pluvialis, and on the other hand, the difficulty in extracting astaxanthin. In recent years, many domestic enterprises have focused on these two aspects and achieved gratifying results. In the southwestern plateau region of China, abundant sunshine, clean water resources, suitable humidity, and a favorable natural environment provide suitable conditions for the growth of rain fed red algae. Thanks to the advantages of natural endowments and breakthroughs in technological barriers, the production of Haematococcus pluvialis and astaxanthin in China currently ranks among the top in the world. The annual production of astaxanthin in Yunnan Province alone accounts for about 40% of the global total production.

In order to meet the continuously growing demand for astaxanthin in the market, domestic enterprises are still actively committed to upgrading the technology of the rain grown red algae industry, in order to further increase the production of rain grown red algae and astaxanthin.

Industry research has shown that light is one of the key factors affecting the accumulation of astaxanthin in rain fed red algae. Among domestic enterprises engaged in the cultivation of Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Zhongming Biotechnology (Shenzhen) Group Co., Ltd. has achieved the world's first fully enclosed industrial Microalgae cultivation system that combines artificial light and sunlight, and has explored a new path for the industry in terms of industrial production capacity implementation. It is worth noting that industrial cultivation of rain grown red algae can also utilize the photosynthesis of microalgae to achieve carbon sequestration, combined with industrial waste gas treatment, which can contribute to industrial carbon reduction and help achieve the "dual carbon" goal.

In terms of downstream product development of astaxanthin, Wang Liqiang, Chief Pharmacist and Professor of the School of Medicine at Huaqiao University, and Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of Molecular Medicine in Fujian Province, stated that astaxanthin has great potential for development in functional foods, health foods, pharmaceuticals, beauty products, and other fields.

In the field of food, research has shown that natural astaxanthin can be safely applied to chicken feed for a long time, thereby achieving astaxanthin enrichment in eggs. Due to the high cost of astaxanthin, the prices of food end products currently produced are also relatively high. With the increase in industrial microalgae farming production in China, the prices of astaxanthin eggs and other food products will further decrease in the future and eventually enter ordinary households, "said Wang Liqiang.

Currently, with the continuous improvement of China's economic level, the whole society's attention to health is also increasing. Under the guidance of the 14th Five Year Plan and the Healthy China Action Plan, China's medical and health industries are entering a period of rapid development opportunities. Breakthroughs and innovations in fields such as Life sciences and applied technologies will also help accelerate the integration of the food industry and the Big Health Industry, creating a new wave of market opportunities for healthy food.
